When Pat Montgomery was 18, his life seemed to be going nowhere. Sort of like the RV he was living in.

Troubles at home and an uncertainty of life had
led him to move out on his own and consider quitting school. "It was ridiculous," Pat, now 22, recalls. "My
brothers and sisters all graduated from high school, and I was trying to drop out." Eventually, the mother
of a close friend spoke with Bonnie Garrison, executive director of Communities in Schools of Coweta, a United
Way community partner.
Garrison told her about the Performance Learning Center (PLC), a program of Communities in Schools of Coweta.
The PLC helps students who are behind in their high school credits and not likely to graduate. The Center
provides students with an opportunity to catch up academically, and develop a personal life plan. At the PLC,
Pat considered the idea of overcoming his obstacles and completing high school.

Pat credits the environment at the PLC with allowing him to relax and work at his own pace to complete the
classes he needed to graduate. After giving some thought to his future, he enlisted in the Marines.
Today, Lance Corporal Pat Montgomery still faces challenges as he serves his country. His future, however,
is fully operational. "I have no idea where I'd be right now if the PLC didn't help me," Pat says. "It gave
me something to look forward to."
New marching orders issued for a future in Coweta.
