STEMup: Youth Maker Competition

Students compete to win grants up to $10,000 to test innovative ideas that can solve problems in their communities.

Founded in 2019 and modeled after the television show “Shark Tank”,  the STEMup: Youth Maker Competition is an opportunity for young people in the Greater Atlanta region to use their ideas, voice, and leadership to improve Greater Atlanta communities.

Through STEMUp, we award grants to youth to test innovative ideas that can solve problems in their communities. This live competition modeled after the television show “Shark Tank” is an opportunity for young people in our region to use their ideas, voice, and leadership to improve our communities.  
The competition is open to middle and high school-aged students in the United Way of Greater Atlanta 13-county footprint.

Important dates:

  • Submission Deadline: May 1st, 2024.

  • All students or student groups who submit will receive feedback and opportunities to speak with subject matter experts in the Design Thinking Workshops held on March 16, 2024 and April 27, 2024.

  • All students or student groups who submit will present at the Live Pitch on May 30, 2024.

    At the live pitch, students may be awarded up to $10,000.00 to support the implementation of their innovative idea. Additional funds to help support the participation in the STEMUp program may be available if needed. Please see the request for additional funds at the end of the application.

How to apply

Step 1

Students will create a 3–5-minute video that discusses their idea for an innovative community solution that utilizes STEM. Step 2

Complete the submission form and upload the video to the application form. 

Step 3

Submissions are due by May 1, 2024. United Way of Greater Atlanta and volunteer judges will review submissions and provide feedback by May 18, 2024.
