Every day, there’s plenty of noise about what needs fixing in our community — articles, news reports, social media reminders, or even just noticing challenges as you’re out and about in your neighborhood. But finding ways to help your community can be simpler than you think.
As the weather warms and neighborhoods across Greater Atlanta start buzzing with spring events, it’s the perfect moment to look around and notice the small things that make our community special, and take the first step towards strengthening it. Want to make new friends or learn new skills? We have options for you. Feeling short on time? Even a few seconds from your phone can help! Keep reading to learn our favorite ways to help your community.
Do good, feel good!
Beyond uplifting our neighbors across the city, there are other benefits of helping your community. To start, helping others can help you too. Studies have shown that giving back can boost your mood, build your self-confidence, and even support your physical health! And that’s not to mention that the experience can also widen your network and teach transferable career skills.
What experts agree on is this: when you’re motivated by the desire to help others and work toward a brighter future for more than just yourself, the impact grows — for you and for your entire community.
Our 5 favorite ways to help your community
Here are our top five ways to get involved and help your community this spring.
1. Volunteer in your community.
Giving back doesn’t just have to mean financially. Volunteering is a great way to help the community. Even one afternoon goes a long way towards helping families thrive! You can find out about opportunities from our partners on our website, from helping families file their tax returns to delivering food through a mobile pantry.
2. Join a community group
Helping the community becomes more enjoyable alongside a group of friends with a shared passion for creating change. Whether you’re a young professional, interested in African-American Partnership, or want to join Women United, you’ll be in good company among our networks of leaders making a difference. When we all show up together, we can make an even bigger impact.
3. Take the next step towards joining a nonprofit board
Serving on a board is one of the most impactful ways to help your community — and getting started is not as difficult as it may seem! Nonprofit board service truly is for anyone. You can learn more about the duties of a volunteer board member and network with organizations across Greater Atlanta when you apply to our board leadership program called VIP (Volunteer Involvement Program).
4. Share messages you believe in with a friend on social media.
The easiest way you can give back is just a simple click of a “share” button on one of our posts on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, or TikTok. It may not seem like a big step, but sharing why you support the cause is one of the best ways to amplify the message and get others involved too. Think about it…likely, some of your favorite community organizations are ones you would never have heard of if it weren’t for word of mouth. If you’re already scrolling, take a second to hit share!
5. Make a donation to a cause you’re passionate about.
Many nonprofits see charitable giving slow down in the spring, in the months after the generosity of the holiday season fades. However, the needs in our community don’t follow a calendar. Families count on our organization all year long. That’s why even a small gift in this “off-season” could go further than you think. Maybe you’re expecting a tax refund or have a bit extra to give back this time of year. Either way, making a donation (or setting up a monthly recurring gift!) shows that you’re committed to showing up for Greater Atlanta in any season.
Helping your community, building a stronger Atlanta
Each of these actions helps move us closer to a community where kids can learn, families make ends meet, and neighborhoods across Greater Atlanta can reach their full potential.
Change doesn’t happen when we wait for someone else to act — it takes root when we step up, together. And spring is the perfect time for that kind of growth.
This spring, take the first step by choosing one of these ways to help our community. When each of us shows up, those steps add up to a stronger, more vibrant Greater Atlanta for everyone.
