Welcome to Voices United, a monthly series highlighting the stories of our diverse and incredible community of supporters—in their own words—and our shared commitment to the neighborhoods we call home.
Meet Rhonda McKinney, a dedicated United Way of Greater Atlanta donor and cabinet leader for both Women United and the African American Partnership (AAP).
Before joining AAP and Women United, Rhonda gave as a Cole Society donor for years, completed board training through our VIP program, and volunteered at events such as the Shoebox Project. After stepping down from leadership at a financial literacy organization, she found herself with more time to get involved—and stepped into United Way of Greater Atlanta cabinet leadership.
What aspect of United Way’s work in the community are you most passionate about supporting?
I support United Way so passionately because its holistic approach addresses root causes and ensures that men, women, and children get the help they need at every stage of life. Whether it is helping children excel in school, helping adults gain career skills and earn a living wage, or helping families find stable housing, this assistance provides life-changing opportunities for a brighter future.
Financial education and financial literacy are critical gaps in marginalized communities, and I am proud that United Way supports agencies helping to close those gaps. I have been sharing this vital information for more than 20 years, and it has legacy implications for these families.
What inspired you to get more involved as Co-Chair of Women United and Vice Chair of AAP?
I believe this is my sixth or seventh year with AAP and my fourth or fifth year with Women United. Really, what inspired me is the mission and the work being done. As an African American woman, it is important to me that I do what I can to help my community. As both a woman and an African American, those focus areas speak to needs in the city and in my community that I feel positioned to help address.
What is your favorite part about leading with AAP?
It is all about the effort we put into fundraising for Powering the Potential to ensure that its programs continue receiving the funding they need to serve children. Being part of the African American Partnership has also allowed me to broaden my community through business resource groups at other companies across the city. We have hosted several amazing professional development events. Members can further their own careers through professional development while helping the community.

What is your favorite memory of your time with Women United?
One of my favorite events is Toast to Her, which recognizes women who have done amazing things in the city. I also value building relationships and broadening our reach through Pack the Purse.
I remember researching feminine products that are not covered by government assistance and learning how expensive they can be. Sometimes women must choose between meeting their own needs, putting food on the table, or getting their children what they need. We provide these necessities in attractive handbags, with the dignity these women deserve. I love this event, and I hope we continue to host it and support women in need throughout our community.

What would you tell someone thinking about getting more involved?
I think everyone has to look at their life and determine what capacity they have. Whether you want to lead as a cabinet member, volunteer your time, donate money, or attend when you can, it is important that those of us who are able give back. Maybe you were once in need yourself, or maybe you have been blessed—and one way to acknowledge those blessings is to help others. I think everyone can find a few hours a month to do something incredible for someone else.
